Violent Things - Page 20

I knew Hollis Jones better than she knew herself, and while it continuously killed me to see her go through all of these fucking emotions, I made sure to stand on the sidelines where she wanted me to.

We stayed in the place for about half an hour before I set down my one and only beer, and told Milo that we needed to keep moving.

He nodded and paid the tab, following me out into the brisk night.

Once outside, I rubbed my hands together, and looked around.

“Let’s skip the next few and try that one,” I suggested, nodding to a hole in the wall across the street.

Without a word, Milo fell into step beside me as we walked to the edge of the sidewalk and waited for a car to go by.

“You coming?” he asked after he began to make his way across the street.

But I was frozen in place.

Because the car we let go by… he was in it.

I memorized his profile when my pretty girl came back to our table at the mall.

His face became synonymous with her sudden melancholy mood and in turn, wormed its way into my soul.

I knew that blood would be the only way to rectify the way that he had affected her.

And I was more than happy to take up the task for her.

Especially since it was one of the few things I could do anymore to prove my love for her.
